Phuket’s paradise beaches

Phuket’s paradise beaches

The ‘Pearl of the Andaman’ would not be drawing more than four million holidaymakers annually if it didn’t boast some of our planet’s most appealing beaches. Not solely that, Phuket has brilliant variety, from the wide range of exciting water-based activities, the kinky atmosphere of Patong to the laid-back and tranquil white sands of Kata Noi beach and Laem Sing.

Phuket’s tourist hotspot is without doubt Patong. This beach was rapidly rebuilt after the severe damage caused by the 2004 tsunami. The promenade never looked that good before. While not really the island’s most stunning beach, Patong is famed for its hedonistic nightlife entertainment scene.

In terms of visitors and action, Karon beach is the second beach on Phuket, which is positioned to the south of Patong. Karon offers a much calmer environment than its busy neighbour and features a more appealing stretch of sand.

Having become a better and much more relaxed alternative, the more family-orientated Kata Beach provides a breathtakingly beautiful and less expensive retreat. Tourists here will find a selection of superb hotel establishments and quality restaurants. Kata Beach also provides the best playground for surfing enthusiasts.

An even finer beach area again for those holidaymakers looking for tranquillity and serenity, Kata Noi is most likely Phuket’s prettiest beach. It is situated just south of Kata Beach.

Nai Harn is the next major beach area south of Kata Noi. It is a favoured escape for locals boasting unbeatable natural beauty and peacefulness. Several of the island’s most luxurious first-class resorts and hotels can be found on Nai Harn Beach, which offers excellent snorkelling options as well.

Kamala Beach is less hectic and much more discreet than Karon and on par with Patong. Although the town isn’t really attractive and the beach area somewhat overdeveloped, Kamala is a better choice for those travelling with children and yet within close proximity of Patong.

Rawai Beach on Phuket’s southern tip is a beloved hangout for expatriates and locals alike, backed by a wide range of mouth-watering seafood restaurants. The sand here isn’t as perfect as the others for swimming and sunbathing and is actually rather unsightly when the tide is entirely out, yet it may be rewarding spending some time here if solely for its intriguing ambience.

Positioned between upmarket Surin and Kamala is Laem Sing, which is a real treasure. Laem Sing offers a laid-back and refreshing change from some of Phuket’s touristy beach areas.

Surin Beach is just a stone’s throw away from Laem Sing and is easier to access and flanked by glitzy resorts and lofty villas of the wealthier crowd. The promenade is home to great seafood restaurants and trendy shops, and the ambience of this undeveloped beach area appeals to tourists and locals alike.

To the north of Surin Beach just around a headland is Bang Tao Beach. This enormous sweeping bay features incredibly fine, tree-lined sands. You would be forgiven for assuming you’re on immaculate island destination when staying at Bang Tao, even in the peak season, as the beach is less crowded yet several five-star rated hotel establishments are hidden away here.

Nai Yang is the most northerly principal beach that is located nearby Phuket Airport.  Although not Phuket’s most appealing, Nai Yang Beach benefits from its location close to the airport. This beach is much cheaper, prettier and calmer than most other beach areas. However, there isn’t much action here.

Beaches on Phuket, which steadily ranks among Southeast Asia’s most popular holiday destinations, are well set up to provide tourists with large umbrellas and sun lounges for hire and vendors strolling the white sands selling ice cream, snacks, fruit, souvenirs, shorts and t-shirts. Nearly all of Phuket’s beach areas boast a number of stalls and eateries serving food and beverages either within a hundred metres or on the beach itself.

Also common are the beachfront massage services providing shaded platforms where professional and experienced masseuses will happily work out those niggling pains and aches while customers are mesmerised by the picture perfect landscape. Perhaps it won’t even be necessary trying to locate the masseuses as sometimes they stroll by advertising their relaxing and revitalising treatments.

Rightfully nicknamed ‘The Pearl of the Andaman’, and Thailand’s largest island certainly is one of the most enchanting holiday destinations on the Asian continent. With Phuket’s breathtakingly beautiful west coast beaches, spectacular tropical hinterland and comprehensive tourist infrastructure this destination takes prime place in the Thailand travel guide books and holiday brochures. There is a wide and varied range of brilliant natural and man-made features to see on this island as well as in the adjacent coastal environment.
