Shopping in Johannesburg – malls, markets & souvenirs

Johannesburg is a shopaholics’ paradise with its countless malls, boutique stalls and bustling craft and flea markets. Children become mall-rats from very young ages here and shopping in Jo’burg is a very popular pastime. There are markets and malls in every part of the city, selling everything from designer handbags to African curios. If you have some money to spend while away, you are sure to find the shops in Johannesburg accommodating. Flea and craft markets
Flea markets in Johannesburg are fun places to rummage around, with everything from second-hand clothing to antiques at bargain prices. Craft markets in Johannesburg are great for souvenirs and presents, with handmade curios and jewellery galore. Be prepared to haggle, however, and watch out for your belongings as unfortunately pick pocketing at Johannesburg markets is common.

JNB Central flea market
Corner of Bree and Wolhuter Streets , Newtown
The JNB Central flea market is open every Saturday and Sunday and sells everything from local crafts a clothing. It’s a great place to pick up curios and souvenirs. Be prepared to haggle, however, as the price is sometimes doubled for anyone with a foreign accent.

Douglasdale Village Craft Market
Douglasdale Shopping Center, 2nd Floor 345, Rivonia, North West 2128
Douglas Village Craft Market is very popular and a great place to find unusual presents. Each crafter sells something different from their little cubicals and the handmade glassware and jewellery are particularly good.

Burma Lake Flea Market
Burma Lake, Johannesburg
This flea market has over 600 traders and sells everything from curios to furniture. There is also some funky clothing stalls and a variety of places to eat

Bryanston Organic Village Market
Culross Road, Bryanston, Johannesburg
Homemade clothing and jewellery can be purchased at Bryanston Organice Village Market along with crystals, leather and vegetables

Crocodile Creek Crafts Village
Top Crop Centre, DF Malan Drive, Muldersdrift, Johannesburg
Glass work and ceramics are a speciality at Crocodile Creek Crafts Village but the furniture and African carvings are also good

Market Theatre Flea Market
Market Theatre, Johannesburg Saturdays only
This bazaar is probably the best known in all of Jo’burg and is a great place for people-watching

Bright Water Commons

Bright Water Coomons is home to a number of nice shops and a flea market. The atmosphere is relaxing here and you don’t normally have to haggle too hard.

Malls and shopping centres
Johannesburg malls are plentiful and there almost seems to be one on every street corner. Most of the bigger Johannesburg shopping centres have cinemas and a variety of restaurants and some funky boutique stalls can be found in the smaller Jo’burg shopping centres.

Sandton City

Sandton City is one of the best malls in Johannesburg and there is something for everyone here, from the adventurous to the discerning. The mall is popular with expats and locals and there are a number and trendy boutiques and designers shops

Cedar Square Shopping Centre

This shopping centre is located in the northern suburbs and has a good range of shops and restaurants. Some of the restaurants have great views of the Jo’burg suburbs and shops include clothing, hardware and electronics stores

The large Northgate shopping centre is home to countless and shops and restaurants. There is also a number of fast food joints here and plenty of parking

Eastgate
