Countdown to World Cup semifinals

Anticipation is building before the World Cup semifinals, with Uruguay taking on Holland on Tuesday after controversially disposing of Ghana in the quarter finals, and Spain set to meet Germany on Wednesday.

The Germans will be filled with confidence after their 4-0 demolition of hotly-fancied Argentina. Maradona’s men marauded into the quarter finals in scintillating style, but were put to the sword by a well-organised German side that valued teamwork above individual brilliance. (more…)

Quarter final places decided

Spain secured a quarter final meeting with surprise package Paraguay after defeating Portugal at Cape Town’s Green Point Stadium last night. The Iberians needed a second half David Villa strike to win 1-0 with their neighbours having more than enough chances to level the scoreline.

The pre-tournament favourites could face either Maradona’s hotly-tipped Argentina or Three Lions conquerors Germany in the semi finals. The 1986 and 1990 tournament finalists will lock horns once again on Saturday in Cape Town with a feisty encounter virtually guaranteed between the old adversaries. (more…)

But England failed to kick on from this dream start and were soon put under pressure, James Milner substituted within half-an-hour after being yellow carded for two rash challenges. (more…)

Gareth Barry has however been named in the squad, with doctors hopeful the Man City midfielder will commence full training immediately after the Three Lions’ opener against the USA in Rustenburg on June 12.

Shaun Wright-Phillips has profited Walcott’s exculsion, which also means that Arsenal have not a single representative for England at the South Africa tournament. (more…)
