If you’ve been used to partying in Johannesburg and Cape Town, you may find Bloemfontein nightlife a little low key. The scene here isn’t particularly chic or hip, but there are plenty of places to let your hair down and sink a few. Clubs in Bloemfontein don’t really exist in the traditional sense, but there is a smattering of lively Bloemfontein bars and pubs to keep those who need it well watered. Getting around Bloemfontein is much like getting around any South Africa city, it can be a chore. Public transport in Bloemfontein is limited but things are slowly being improved in time for the 2010 Soccer World Cup. Car hire in Bloemfontein is considered as one of the best ways to travel within the city for tourists, but if you don’t drive, taxis are also pretty cheap. Getting to Bloemfontein from other World Cup host cities is a lot easier, however, with regular buses, trains and planes connecting them all. Although the city may not be renown as a centre of South African culinary excellence, there are quite a few Bloemfontein restaurants that would make even the snobbiest gourmand sit up and take notice. With an emphasis on meat and the prime cattle that graze nearby, menus here are often eclectic with a range of traditional African fare mixing with the best of Europe and Asia. Bloemfontein / Mangaung restaurants are not as filled with seafood as some of the cities nearer the coast, although it is still possible to find fresh fish at reasonable prices if you follow our guide.
