Cape Town’s brand new Green Point stadium has been constructed especially for the 2010 World Cup and will be a focal point for the tournament’s success. Due to host eight games in total including the first semi-final, Green Point stadium in Cape Town has an overall capacity of 70,000 and stunning Table Mountain as a backdrop
Named after the Green Point suburb of Cape Town where it is located, the staidum is only a short walk for fans from the main transport hubs or the coast with plenty of places to stay. The common where the new stadium has been built is partly occupied by a golf course and was historically named “de Waterplaats” by 18th century Dutch settlers and once hosted sailing regattas.
After the World Cup Green Point will be the home ground of both Ajax Cape Town FC and Santos FC. Cape Town’s second world-class stadium, Newlands, is mainly used to host rugby union matches.
However, it did witness the mighty Tottenham Hotspur play during their pre-season tour of South Africa in 2003.
